Why I Teach

Yesterday I had a student bring in "plant." It was a goner but I didn't have the heart to tell her. All morning she moved it from window sill to window sill convincing me (and herself) that, "It gets better sunlight over here." Mid morning she wrapped the plant in her sweatshirt and moved it to the counter, opposite the windows stating, "It was getting cold by the window." After lunch she asked if she could feed it, so she left it in the sink with the faucet dripping all through our math lesson. At the end of the day I realized the plant was still in the sink and reminded her not to forget it. She cleaned up the plant and left it on my desk with a note: "Miss Montambault, Happy Valentine's Day. Take good care of our plant. I love you."

  1. Oh Abby, That has got to be the most precious Valentines gift. I'm interested to hear how (if) the plant is surviving. And yes, it is those moments when students touch us in sweet profound ways that make everything about being a teacher worth it. Congratulations Miss Montambault, for a job well done. :)

  2. That's adorable! It just goes to show how much trust our students put in us. She was convinced that you could love and take care of her plant better than she could. We have to savor moments like this among all the craziness, and yours might last me a few days!

  3. It's moments like this where we remember them and they remember us. There is so much more to people than how and what they learn. We just get to be along for the journey called life with these fabulous friends we call our students each day. Their simplicity, nativity, as well as positive outlook on life is always so uplifting!
